What is Palo Santo?

You know the scent—  the scent of palo santo wood. This smell brings back so many memories to my time spent in South America. It was a time where I felt so connected to my roots and nature. There has been a rise of using more natural products and a growth of consciousness around energy and spirituality turning to ancient practices from cultures that live more connected to nature. This unique wood is most widely used for purification and house cleansing. Palo Santo has really shaped our brand to what it is today and I feel so grateful to work so closely with this special wood and sharing its scent with others.

The trees are native to Peru, Ecuador, the Galápagos Islands and a few other South American western countries along the coast. For centuries, Palo Santo, which translated means “holy wood,” has been burned as an energy cleanser. The ritual comes from Incan tradition that says the smoke from the wood, burned during spiritual ceremonies, is medicinal. Once the wood is burned, the smoke is believed to clear negative energy and restore tranquility and calm emotions. The earthy, citrus aroma of this wood changes the energy inside any room.

Because Palo Santo is becoming more popular you have to make sure its been ethically sourced. Our Palo Santo most certainly is and comes to us from a local family in Ecuador. The tree's branches or the entire tree has to naturally fall or break off, before the Palo Santo can be harvested from it.  Any ethical supplier should be familiar with South American suppliers and how they comply with Palo Santo importation and regulations. This way you’ll end up with Palo Santo that has the spiritual properties you want to bring into your life and honors the rich history and the region it comes from.

Palo Santo is all about covering the space in which you need a boost of purified energy and want to attract alllll the good stuff with intention. And when it comes to how often you should smudge, I suggest to use Palo Santo as often as you feel you need to—whatever it takes to surround yourself with the pure energy you want. I typically smudge my home and space once every week while leaving a few windows open to remove any stagnant energy and bring in new, fresh air. I also find it beneficial to smudge myself and surround myself with the Palo Santo smoke to cleanse my aura and calm emotions.

To burn palo santo wood sticks:
  1. Light a palo santo stick with a candle, lighter, or match.
  2. Hold the stick downward at a 45-degree angle.
  3. Let the stick burn for 30 seconds.
  4. Blow out the flame. Place the stick in a heatproof dish to let it burn.

Any burned wood releases smoke compounds that can cause significant harm when inhaled over a long time. And exposure to the particles released by burning wood can unfortunately be irritating to the lungs. To take advantage of Palo Santo and its unique smell, we distill this wood and use its wood extracts in our everyday home products! It is a safer way to receive the benefits of Palo Santo and in a cleaner way.
